Design Works was founded in 1982 by President/Sign Artist Larry Plummer. Larry’s passion for fine art and lettering led him to become an airbrush muralist, and later spurred him on to train for six years with a full service sign company. His growing desire to incorporate elements of fine art into the commercial world of signs was the driving force behind his decision to open his own studio in Trenton, N.J.

Over the next twenty years, Larry earned a reputation as one of the finest sign artists and designers in the area. He is well respected by his peers as well as his many satisfied clients, and his work has been showcased in many national sign publications.

In 2002, he moved to Hillsborough, N.J. where he and his wife, Mary Ann formed Design Works Custom Sign Studio LLC. While the location has changed, his focus remains the same: providing each and every client with superior design, expert craftsmanship, and in-depth consulting services.

Integrating the Old and the New

While terms like Expert Craftsman and Fine Artisan may be overused today, there are no shortcuts to gaining the skills necessary to earn these titles. It requires many years and countless hours practicing classic techniques such as relief carving, marbleizing, wood graining, traditionally applied gold leafing, and creating realistic illustrations with oil, acrylic, watercolor, and airbrushing.

In addition, it is also critical to stay abreast of the latest cutting edge technology: computer aided design, cnc (computer-controlled) machining, mold-making and casting, and high-tech composite materials and coatings.
